| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating the month of October 2009 as "Italian-American |
2 | Heritage Month" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Christopher Columbus was a navigator, colonizer and |
4 | explorer whose voyages across the Atlantic Ocean led to |
5 | widespread European awareness of the American continents in the |
6 | Western Hemisphere; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Columbus' voyage in 1492 for King Ferdinand II and |
8 | Queen Isabella of Spain opened up critical routes for trade |
9 | between Spain and the New World; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Columbus also made a total of four trips to the |
11 | Caribbean and South America between 1492 and 1504; and |
12 | WHEREAS, The Commission for Social Justice division of the |
13 | Order of the Sons of Italy in America honors Christopher |
14 | Columbus and the many accomplishments of Italian Americans; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The Commission for Social Justice regularly informs |
16 | the media and general public about Italian-American |
17 | achievements, contributions, history and culture; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Italian Americans are the fifth largest ethnic group |
2 | in the United States according to the United States Census |
3 | Bureau and have made significant contributions in the arts, |
4 | athletics, education, politics, exploration and business; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The Senate recognizes the many accomplishments of |
6 | Italian Americans and wishes to bring these achievements to the |
7 | attention of the public in this Commonwealth; therefore be it |
8 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of October 2009 |
9 | as "Italian-American Heritage Month" in Pennsylvania. |
