| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the 50th anniversary of the Three Rivers Arts Festival |
2 | in the City of Pittsburgh. |
3 | WHEREAS, On June 5th, 2009, the Three Rivers Arts Festival |
4 | began the celebration of its 50th anniversary in the heart of |
5 | downtown Pittsburgh, continuing its commitment to bringing |
6 | quality art to the city in the form of visual art exhibitions, |
7 | performances and film screenings; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Founded in 1960 by the Women's Committee of the |
9 | Carnegie Museum of Art, the Three Rivers Arts Festival was |
10 | originally envisioned as a small outdoor art show near the |
11 | Carnegie Institute; and |
12 | WHEREAS, The first chairman of the festival, Adolph Schmidt, |
13 | convinced the founders to take the art show downtown; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Today, the Three Rivers Arts festival is the |
15 | region's largest multidisciplinary showcase of visual and |
16 | performing arts, having presented more than 10,000 visual and |
17 | performing artists and entertained millions of residents and |
18 | visitors during its 50 years; and |

1 | WHEREAS, In 2008, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust assumed |
2 | responsibility of the Three Rivers Arts Festival and this year, |
3 | the trust is returning the event to Point State Park, where the |
4 | Dollar Bank Main Stage, an expanded artist's market footprint |
5 | and the children's area are located; and |
6 | WHEREAS, This year's event will have the continued use of |
7 | Gateway Center and the gallery and theater network found in the |
8 | cultural district and will feature more than 100 individual |
9 | events and performances and activities for families and |
10 | children, as well as live music and an artist's market for more |
11 | than 500 artists; and |
12 | WHEREAS, The Three Rivers Arts Festival has grown into a $1.1 |
13 | million annual event that generates a $19 million economic |
14 | benefit for the region; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The Three Rivers Arts Festival is the largest |
16 | presenter of free arts programming in southwestern Pennsylvania, |
17 | and its performances include musicians, dancers and various |
18 | other acts and demonstrations; and |
19 | WHEREAS, The festival's more than 1,000 individual artists |
20 | offer a broad range of art, including paintings, jewelry, |
21 | pottery, wearable art, unusual crafts, sculpture and other |
22 | visual pieces, while artisans demonstrate their work with glass, |
23 | wood and ink; and |
24 | WHEREAS, The Three Rivers Arts Festival is a gateway to the |
25 | arts for millions of citizens in Pittsburgh and southwest |
26 | Pennsylvania, as well as more than 90,000 individuals who visit |
27 | from outside the region; therefore be it |
28 | RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the 50th anniversary of the |
29 | Three Rivers Arts Festival in the City of Pittsburgh. |
