A RESOLUTION

Honoring the Pittsburgh organization Riverlife for its mission

2

to reclaim, restore and promote Pittsburgh's riverfronts as

3

the environmental, recreational, cultural and economic hub

4

for the people of this region and our visitors.

5

WHEREAS, Riverlife began when a group of Pittsburgh community

6

leaders, business owners, environmentalists and urban planners

7

saw the need to develop a master plan for Pittsburgh's most

8

valuable asset, its rivers and their miles of shoreline; and

9

WHEREAS, Riverlife was created in 1999 as the Riverlife Task

10

Force; and

11

WHEREAS, Riverlife is a public-private partnership

12

established to guide and advocate for the redevelopment of

13

Pittsburgh's riverfronts; and

14

WHEREAS, Today, Riverlife's stewardship extends up the

15

Allegheny River to the 31st Street Bridge, down the Monongahela

16

River to the Hot Metal Bridge and along the Ohio River to the

West End Bridge; and

2

WHEREAS, Through a variety of public-private partnerships

3

integrating the efforts of State, city and private developers,

4

Riverlife points proudly to a host of projects already in place,

5

with several currently underway and more planned for the future;

6

and

7

WHEREAS, This seamless sequence of open spaces for civic

8

engagement will ultimately knit our neighborhoods together and

9

reconnect us with our living environment; and

10

WHEREAS, In 2001, following a public planning process,

11

Riverlife presented a plan for Three Rivers Park, a grand,

12

urban-scale waterfront park at the confluence of the three

13

rivers in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh; and

14

WHEREAS, That plan, known as "A Vision Plan for Pittsburgh's

15

Riverfronts," was the winner of the 2002 AIA Honor Award in

16

Urban Planning and Design and the 2002 Merit Award in Planning

17

from the International Downtown Association; and

18

WHEREAS, In 2008, Riverlife Task Force shortened its name to

19

Riverlife, reflecting the organization's growth and

20

transformation from a "task force" to a governing board of

21

directors; and

22

WHEREAS, Through Riverlife's leadership, more than half of

23

the 13-mile Three Rivers Park loop has been established and

24

improved for public use; and

25

WHEREAS, Key projects comprising the next phase of the park

26

are under construction; and

27

WHEREAS, Riverlife has a plan in place to complete the

28

remainder of the park over the next ten years; and

29

WHEREAS, As Riverlife celebrates its 10th anniversary in

30

2010, it is remarkable to assess the impact Three Rivers Park

has had on downtown living, recreation and the economy;

therefore be it

3

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Riverlife

4

on its 10th anniversary and for its mission to reclaim, restore

5

and promote Pittsburgh's riverfronts as the environmental,

6

recreational, cultural and economic hub for the people of this

7

region and our visitors; and be it further

8

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to

9
