| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the National Museum of American Jewish History, an |
2 | affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, as the only museum |
3 | in the United States dedicated exclusively to exploring and |
4 | preserving the American Jewish experience. |
5 | WHEREAS, The National Museum of American Jewish History |
6 | serves to illustrate how the freedom present in the United |
7 | States and its associated choices, challenges and |
8 | responsibilities fostered an environment in which Jewish |
9 | Americans have made and continue to make extraordinary |
10 | contributions in all facets of American life; and |
11 | WHEREAS, The mission of the National Museum of American |
12 | Jewish History, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, is |
13 | to connect Jewish people more closely to their heritage and to |
14 | inspire in individuals of all backgrounds a greater appreciation |

1 | for the diversity of the American experience and the freedoms to |
2 | which all Americans aspire; and |
3 | WHEREAS, The National Museum of American Jewish History was |
4 | founded in 1976 by members of the historic Congregation Mikveh |
5 | Israel which was itself established in 1740 and known as the |
6 | "Synagogue of the American Revolution"; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The National Museum of American Jewish History has |
8 | attracted a broad audience to its public programs which explore |
9 | American Jewish identity through lectures, panel discussions, |
10 | authors' talks, films, activities for children, theater and |
11 | music; and |
12 | WHEREAS, The National Museum of American Jewish History is |
13 | the repository of the largest collection of Jewish Americana in |
14 | the world with more than 25,000 objects; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The National Museum of American Jewish History |
16 | recently relocated to a 100,000-square foot, five-story, state- |
17 | of-the-art facility on Independence Mall in Philadelphia, |
18 | standing just steps from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall |
19 | which shall serve as a cornerstone of the American Jewish |
20 | community and a source of national pride; therefore be it |
21 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives acknowledge the |
22 | importance of the continuing study and preservation of the |
23 | unique American Jewish experience; and be it further |
24 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the |
25 | National Museum of American Jewish History, an affiliate of the |
26 | Smithsonian Institution, as the only museum in the United States |
27 | dedicated exclusively to exploring and preserving the American |
28 | Jewish experience. |
