A RESOLUTION

Designating October 21, 2010, as "Biomedical Research Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, The biomedical research community in the United

4

States and especially in this Commonwealth is recognized as a

5

world leader in discoveries which promote health and the

6

treatment of disease; and

7

WHEREAS, Virtually every major medical advance in the past

8

century has depended upon biomedical research; and

9

WHEREAS, These advances include the prevention and treatment

10

of cancer, discoveries of vaccines for the prevention of

11

measles, mumps, polio and hepatitis, and medications to treat

12

high blood pressure, arthritis and mental illness, among many

13

others; and

14

WHEREAS, Biomedical research has helped increase the life

15

span of people in the United States through the development of

vaccines, antibiotics and anti-infective drugs; and

2

WHEREAS, Biomedical research has contributed to the

3

elimination of many epidemic diseases and has helped to prevent

4

numerous childhood killers in the United States; and

5

WHEREAS, Biomedical researchers are working diligently toward

6

cures for Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, acquired immune

7

deficiency syndrome (AIDS), cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, heart

8

and lung diseases, mental illnesses, multiple sclerosis and

9

countless other diseases affecting millions of people in the

10

United States; and

11

WHEREAS, Biomedical research has contributed to the health

12

and well-being of animals through vaccines and has helped the

13

prospects of endangered species by reducing diseases and

14

promoting reproduction; and

15

WHEREAS, Biomedical research offers the best hope for new

16

breakthroughs in disease detection and treatment; and

17

WHEREAS, The biomedical research community in this

18

Commonwealth and throughout the United States is recognized as

19

the world leader in discovering and developing new knowledge and

20

ideas that promote better health and the treatment of disease;

21

therefore be it

22

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October

23

21, 2010, as "Biomedical Research Day" in Pennsylvania in

24

recognition of the biomedical research community and its service

25

to this Commonwealth.
