A RESOLUTION

Designating August 2010 as "Psoriasis Awareness Month" in

2

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, Psoriasis is a genetic disease of the immune system,

4

which requires steadfast treatment and lifelong attention and

5

affects as many as 7.5 million Americans; and

6

WHEREAS, Psoriasis causes as much disability as other major

7

diseases, including cancer, arthritis, hypertension, heart

8

disease, diabetes and depression; and

9

WHEREAS, Anywhere from 10% to 30% of people with psoriasis

10

develop psoriatic arthritis, a form of arthritis that causes

11

pain, stiffness and swelling in and around the joints; and

12

WHEREAS, Psoriasis is associated with numerous comorbid

13

conditions, including Crohn's disease, diabetes, metabolic

syndrome, obesity, hypertension, heart attack, cardiovascular

2

disease and liver disease; and

3

WHEREAS, There are many myths and misconceptions about

4

psoriasis which directly impact the quality of life of those

5

with the disease and their families; and

6

WHEREAS, Psoriasis is commonly and incorrectly considered a

7

mere annoyance, a superficial problem mistakenly thought to be

8

contagious or due to poor hygiene; and

9

WHEREAS, Psoriasis is a chronic, life-altering and often

10

debilitating condition for which there are limited effective,

11

safe and affordable treatment options, and no cure; and

12

WHEREAS, Through education and advocacy there is a hope that

13

one day, with everyone's help, a cure will be found; therefore

14

be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate August

16

2010 as "Psoriasis Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
