| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing and congratulating the City of Allentown on the |
2 | 250th anniversary of its founding. |
3 | WHEREAS, The City of Allentown is celebrating its 250th |
4 | anniversary in 2012; and |
5 | WHEREAS, In 1762, shipping merchant William Allen founded |
6 | Northampton Towne, a 12-cabin village; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Allentown has played an important role in our |
8 | nation's history; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Founding father John Adams passed through |
10 | Northampton Towne in 1777; and |
11 | WHEREAS, During the American Revolution, 11 bells from |
12 | Philadelphia, including the Liberty Bell, were hidden in |
13 | Northampton Towne under the floorboards of Zion's United Church |
14 | of Christ on Hamilton Street; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Northampton Towne was named the county seat of |
16 | Lehigh County and renamed Allentown in 1838; and |
17 | WHEREAS, After the Industrial Revolution, Allentown became an |

1 | important industrial center, connected by major railroads and |
2 | canals, and was a hotbed for the manufacturing of iron, steel, |
3 | cement and textiles; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Allentown developed a strong tradition in the |
5 | brewing of beer in the 19th and 20th centuries; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Allentown has transformed itself into a center for |
7 | finance, health care, education, technology and science; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Allentown has had a long tradition of diversity, |
9 | from its multilingual and multinational beginnings to today; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The Legacy Project has been initiated in conjunction |
11 | with Allentown's 250th anniversary, taking inventory of every |
12 | piece of public art throughout the city and developing a program |
13 | of maintenance and restoration for all public art; and |
14 | WHEREAS, A variety of events have been planned in celebration |
15 | of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the city; therefore |
16 | be it |
17 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and |
18 | congratulate the City of Allentown on the occasion of the 250th |
19 | anniversary of its founding. |
