A RESOLUTION

Recognizing August 27, 2012, as "LeRoy W. Homer, Jr. Day" in

2

Pennsylvania and honoring Mr. LeRoy W. Homer, Jr.'s

3

accomplishments and bravery as an inspiration for the next

4

generation of pilots.

5

WHEREAS, Mr. LeRoy Wilton Homer, Jr., was born on August 27,

6

1965, in Long Island, New York; and

7

WHEREAS, Growing up, Mr. Homer dreamed of becoming a pilot

8

and quickly realized his dream by beginning instruction at 15

9

years of age and obtaining his pilot's license by 18 years of

10

age; and

11

WHEREAS, On July 6, 1983, Mr. Homer entered the United States

12

Air Force Academy as a member of the class of 1987; and

13

WHEREAS, Mr. Homer graduated on May 27, 1987, and was

14

commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air

15

Force (USAF); and

16

WHEREAS, After completing his USAF pilot training in 1988,

Mr. Homer was assigned to McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey,

2

flying a Lockheed C-141 Starlifter; and

3

WHEREAS, Mr. Homer served in Operation Desert Storm and

4

Operation Desert Shield during the Persian Gulf War and risked

5

his life while flying humanitarian operations in Somalia; and

6

WHEREAS, Prior to his honorable discharge from active duty in

7

1995, Mr. Homer achieved the rank of captain; and

8

WHEREAS, Mr. Homer continued his military career as a member

9

of the United States Air Force Reserve, initially serving as a

10

C-141 instructor pilot with the 356th Airlift Squadron at

11

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio; and

12

WHEREAS, Mr. Homer subsequently served as an academy liaison

13

officer and was charged with recruiting potential candidates for

14

both the Air Force Academy and the Air Force Reserve Officer

15

Training Corps; and

16

WHEREAS, Mr. Homer continued his flying career as a civilian

17

by joining United Airlines in May 1995 as second officer on the

18

Boeing 727; and

19

WHEREAS, In 1996, Mr. Homer was promoted to first officer on

20

the Boeing 757, where he remained until September 11, 2001; and

21

WHEREAS, On September 11, 2001, Mr. Homer and Captain Jason

22

M. Dahl were en route from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco,

23

California, on Flight 93 when their airplane was hijacked by

24

four Al Qaeda terrorists; and

25

WHEREAS, After learning of the earlier incidences at the

26

World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Mr. Homer and several crew

27

members and passengers attempted to fight off their captors and

28

reclaim the airplane, which resulted in a fatal crash in a field

29

in Shanksville; and

30

WHEREAS, For his actions on board Flight 93, Mr. Homer

received many awards and citations posthumously, including

2

honorary membership in the historic Tuskegee Airmen, the

3

Congress of Racial Equality's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award,

4

the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's Drum Major for

5

Justice Award and the Westchester County Trailblazer Award; and

6

WHEREAS, In 2002, The LeRoy W. Homer, Jr. Foundation was

7

founded in honor of Mr. Homer's accomplishments and his passion

8

for flight; and

9

WHEREAS, The LeRoy W. Homer, Jr. Foundation encourages and

10

supports young adults who wish to pursue careers as professional

11

pilots and promotes awareness about aviation careers to

12

disadvantaged youth; therefore be it

13

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize August

14

27, 2012, as "LeRoy W. Homer, Jr. Day" in Pennsylvania and honor

15

Mr. LeRoy W. Homer, Jr.'s accomplishments and bravery as an

16

inspiration for the next generation of pilots.
