| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the establishment of a sister port relationship |
2 | between the Port of Philadelphia and Sydport, Sydney, Nova |
3 | Scotia. |
4 | WHEREAS, The Port of Philadelphia (PoP) is a port facility of |
5 | the Maritime Joint Labor Management Committee of Delaware Bay |
6 | (MLMC); and |
7 | WHEREAS, The MLMC port facilities account for between 4% and |
8 | 5% of the containerized trade moving within the North Atlantic |
9 | port range (NAPR), have excellent rail service and are |
10 | competitively priced and geographically well situated to |
11 | increase market share within the NAPR; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Containerized cargo provides the greatest regional |
13 | economic impact of all cargo modes, and the MLMC desires to work |
14 | in a coordinated fashion to increase container volume within the |
15 | Port of Philadelphia; and |
16 | WHEREAS, There is available land to support new container |

1 | terminal facilities within the area of the Port of Philadelphia; |
2 | and |
3 | WHEREAS, The Suez Canal will increasingly become the trade |
4 | lane of choice for cargo from Southeast Asia and the Indian |
5 | subcontinent, and this cargo will be carried in larger vessels; |
6 | and |
7 | WHEREAS, There is an approved development for a container |
8 | terminal in Sydney, Nova Scotia (Sydport), the first port of |
9 | call on mainland North America for vessels transiting via the |
10 | Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea, specifically designed to |
11 | accommodate the largest container vessels unconstrained by air |
12 | gap or water depth; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Sydport has existing rail service into the North |
14 | American network, but an important part of its business also |
15 | involves transshipment to a terminal, such as the Port of |
16 | Philadelphia, that can economically service a large portion of |
17 | the consumer market currently serviced by the ports of New York, |
18 | New Jersey and Virginia; and |
19 | WHEREAS, In September 2009, the MLMC and the Sydney Marine |
20 | Group (SMG), the entity that manages Sydport, entered into a |
21 | strategic alliance to cooperate in jointly developing the Port |
22 | of Philadelphia and Sydport; therefore be it |
23 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the |
24 | beneficial partnership among the Port of Philadelphia and |
25 | Sydport and urge the continued development of a sister port |
26 | relationship between those ports to grow the Port of |
27 | Philadelphia. |
