A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of February 2009 as "American Heart Month"

2

in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease is this nation's leading

4

cause of death with direct and indirect costs estimated to be

5

$475.3 billion in 2009; and

6

WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease accounts for more than 35% of

7

all deaths nationwide; and

8

WHEREAS, Each year, 53% of all deaths due to cardiovascular

9

disease and 61% due to stroke, occur in females; and

10

WHEREAS, Nearly 2,400 Americans died of cardiovascular

11

disease each day, an average of one death every 37 seconds; and

12

WHEREAS, In 2006, more than 43,100 people died from

cardiovascular disease in this Commonwealth; and

2

WHEREAS, More women die of heart disease, stroke and all

3

other cardiovascular diseases than the next five leading causes

4

of death combined, including cancer; and

5

WHEREAS, An estimated 785,000 people in the United States

6

will have a new coronary attack, an estimated 470,000 people

7

nationwide will have a recurrent attack and an additional

8

195,000 "silent" coronary attacks will go undiagnosed this year;

9

and

10

WHEREAS, More than 90% of primary care physicians don't know

11

that heart disease kills more women than men each year; and

12

WHEREAS, Women are less likely than men to receive certain

13

diagnostic testing and treatments, such as angioplasties and

14

stents, for cardiovascular diseases; and

15

WHEREAS, Drug and medical device effectiveness may differ in

16

women and men, yet doctors and researchers often do not know how

17

safe and effective a particular medicine or device is for women;

18

and

19

WHEREAS, The research clearly shows that there are tools

20

available to increase survival rates from cardiovascular

21

disease; and

22

WHEREAS, Efforts of the American Heart Association encourage

23

citizens to help save lives by calling 911 if symptoms occur,

24

become trained in CPR and encourage comprehensive automated

25

external defibrillator programs in their communities; and

26

WHEREAS, Making the right choices relating to proper

27

nutrition, physical activity, doctor visits and other lifestyle

28

methods is essential to living a heart-healthy life; and

29

WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is celebrating

30

February 2009 as "American Heart Month" and promoting education

and awareness by encouraging citizens to learn the warning signs

2

of heart attack and stroke; therefore be it

3

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, in recognition

4

of the importance of the ongoing fight against heart disease,

5

designate February 2009 as "American Heart Month" in

6

Pennsylvania and urge all citizens to recognize the critical

7

importance of tools and skills that will increase survival rates

8

from cardiac arrest so that thousands of lives can be saved each

9

year.
