A RESOLUTION

  

1

Commemorating the week of April 27 through May 2, 2009, as

2

"Pennsylvania State Police Memorial Week" in Pennsylvania and

3

honoring the memory of the Pennsylvania State Police officers

4

who gave their lives in the line of duty in this

5

Commonwealth.

6

WHEREAS, In the late 1800s this Commonwealth found itself

7

torn by disputes between managers and laborers as Pennsylvania

8

made its transition into a major industrial center; and

9

WHEREAS, It became evident that the town constables, sheriffs

10

and similar local officials, who had been adequate to keep the

11

peace in more stable times, were unable to cope with the new

12

populations and the violent labor troubles of the times; and

13

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State Police was established as an

executive department of State government by legislation and

2

signed into law on May 2, 1905; and

3

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State Police represent no class or

4

condition, no prejudice or interest, nothing but the sovereign

5

majesty of the law; and

6

WHEREAS, Theodore Roosevelt described the Pennsylvania State

7

Police as a model of efficiency, a model of honesty and a model

8

of absolute freedom from political contamination; and

9

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State Police swear to serve

10

honestly, faithfully, and if need be, lay down their lives as

11

others have done before, in order to ensure the protection of

12

the citizens of this Commonwealth; and

13

WHEREAS, Ninety-one members of the Pennsylvania State Police

14

have been killed in the line of duty since the department was

15

established in 1905; therefore be it

16

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the

17

memories of the 91 Pennsylvania State troopers who have given

18

their lives in the line of duty in this Commonwealth since 1905;

19

and be it further

20

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate April

21

27 through May 2, 2009, as "Pennsylvania State Police Memorial

22

Week" in Pennsylvania.
