| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing September 11, 2011, as a day of solemn commemoration |
2 | of the events of September 11, 2001, and offering the |
3 | Commonwealth's deepest and most sincere condolences to the |
4 | families, friends and loved ones of the innocent victims of |
5 | the attacks. |
6 | WHEREAS, At 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2001, hijacked |
7 | American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the |
8 | World Trade Center in New York City, New York; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Seventeen minutes later, hijacked United Airlines |
10 | Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade |
11 | Center; and |
12 | WHEREAS, At 9:37 a.m., the Pentagon was hit by hijacked |
13 | American Airlines Flight 77, the impact of which caused |
14 | immediate and catastrophic damage to the headquarters of the |
15 | Department of Defense; and |

1 | WHEREAS, At approximately 10 a.m., the passengers and crew of |
2 | hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 acted heroically to retake |
3 | control of the airplane and thwart the taking of additional |
4 | American lives by crashing the airliner in Shanksville, Somerset |
5 | County, and, in doing so, gave their lives to save countless |
6 | others; and |
7 | WHEREAS, These attacks claimed nearly 3,000 innocent lives, |
8 | becoming the most devastating attack on American soil in our |
9 | history; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Many individuals unselfishly gave their lives in |
11 | unyielding courage and sacrifice with the passenger resistance |
12 | that occurred on United Airlines Flight 93 in Somerset County; |
13 | and |
14 | WHEREAS, Their acts of courage and sacrifice for our country |
15 | are worthy of acknowledgment and commendation, and they shall |
16 | remain in our hearts and minds forever, their remembrance |
17 | continuing to be passed on to future generations; and |
18 | WHEREAS, The heroic and gallant sacrifices the emergency |
19 | medical services responders made on that disastrous September |
20 | morning are likewise worthy and deserving of commemoration, |
21 | recognition and honor on this 10th anniversary of the attacks; |
22 | and |
23 | WHEREAS, Ten years later, thousands of men and women in the |
24 | United States Armed Forces remain in harm's way defending the |
25 | United States against those who seek to threaten the United |
26 | States; and |
27 | WHEREAS, On September 11, 2001, the terrorists targeted |
28 | symbols of American strength and prosperity as an attack on the |
29 | principles, values and freedoms of the American people, but |
30 | instead, inspired the very best of American courage, compassion |

1 | and resilience and demonstrated our resolve to protect our |
2 | democracy and our way of life; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Because of the loss of innocent lives, left behind |
4 | were husbands, wives, children, mothers, fathers, brothers, |
5 | sisters, family members and friends who, along with the nation |
6 | as a whole, will forever mourn that catastrophic day and the |
7 | lives that were lost; and |
8 | WHEREAS, On the 10th anniversary of this tragic day, the |
9 | thoughts of the people of this Commonwealth and the United |
10 | States are with the victims of the events of September 11, 2001, |
11 | and their families; therefore be it |
12 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize |
13 | September 11, 2011, as a day of solemn commemoration of the |
14 | events of September 11, 2001, and offer its deepest and most |
15 | sincere condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of |
16 | the innocent victims of the attacks; and be it further |
17 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives reaffirm that the |
18 | people of this Commonwealth will never forget the challenges our |
19 | country endured on and since September 11, 2001, and will work |
20 | tirelessly to preserve our freedom and to defeat those who |
21 | attacked the United States; and be it further |
22 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives pay special |
23 | tribute, on this 10th anniversary of the attacks, to all the men |
24 | and women who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. |
