| AN ACT |
| |
1 | Designating State Route 283 300, from the PA Turnpike | <-- |
2 | Interchange in Lower Swatara Township, Dauphin County, to |
3 | State Route 30 in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, as the |
4 | 283rd Field Artillery Battalion Highway. |
5 | The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania |
6 | hereby enacts as follows: |
7 | Section 1. The 283rd Field Artillery Battalion Highway. |
8 | (a) Findings.-- |
9 | (1) The soldiers of the United States Army's 283rd Field |
10 | Artillery Battalion served with valor and distinction in |
11 | combat in the European Theater of Operations in World War II. |
12 | The battalion was in combat for 268 continuous days and |
13 | traveled a total distance of approximately 10,757 miles over |
14 | land and sea during active service. |
15 | (2) The 283rd Field Artillery Battalion was activated at |

1 | Camp Rucker, Alabama, on June 25, 1943. After a year of |
2 | stateside training, the Battalion sailed to the United |
3 | Kingdom on June 22, 1944, where training continued at Camp |
4 | Llanover, Wales, before cross-channel deployment. |
5 | (3) The 283rd Field Artillery Battalion was part of the |
6 | historic landing at Utah Beach on August 11, 1944. The |
7 | battalion fought through France to Berchtesgaden, Germany, |
8 | during the Campaign for Northern France from August 11 to |
9 | September 14, 1944. |
10 | (4) The 283rd continued combat in the Campaign for the |
11 | Rhineland from September 15, 1944, to March 22, 1945, and in |
12 | the Campaign for Central Europe from March 23, 1945 to May 8, |
13 | 1945 (VE Day). |
14 | (5) During the final campaign, the 283rd Field Artillery |
15 | Battalion took part in the Battle of Bamberg, the Battle of |
16 | Nurnberg and the Battle of Munich. |
17 | (6) Not organic to any specific division, the 283rd |
18 | Field Artillery Battalion served under various headquarters |
19 | of Armies, Corps, Groups and Divisions. |
20 | (b) Designation.--State Route 283 300, from the PA Turnpike | <-- |
21 | Interchange in Lower Swatara Township, Dauphin County, to State |
22 | Route 30 in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, is designated as |
23 | the 283rd Field Artillery Battalion Highway. |
24 | (c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and |
25 | maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the highway to |
26 | traffic in both directions. |
27 | Section 2. Effective date. |
28 | This act shall take effect in 60 days. |
