| AN ACT |
| |
1 | Designating the bridge carrying Bridge Street (State Route 4021) |
2 | over Brubaker Run in the Borough of Hasting, Cambria County, |
3 | as the Sergeant Derek Lee Shanfield Memorial Bridge. |
4 | The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania |
5 | hereby enacts as follows: |
6 | Section 1. Sergeant Derek Lee Shanfield Memorial Bridge. |
7 | (a) Findings.--The General Assembly finds and declares as |
8 | follows: |
9 | (1) Derek Lee Shanfield was born in Indiana, |
10 | Pennsylvania, on April 27, 1988, and graduated from Cambria |
11 | Heights High School in 2006. |
12 | (2) Derek L. Shanfield and his twin brother, Marine Cpl. |
13 | Devin L. Shanfield, joined the Marines in 2005. Both were |
14 | stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, but in different |

1 | units. |
2 | (3) Derek L. Shanfield's older brother, Sydney, had |
3 | enlisted in the Marines in 2001. |
4 | (4) Derek L. Shanfield was promoted to Sergeant in April |
5 | 2010 and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in |
6 | May 2010. |
7 | (5) Sergeant Derek L. Shanfield passed away on June 8, |
8 | 2010, at the age of 22 while supporting combat operations in |
9 | Helmand Province, Afghanistan. |
10 | (6) Sergeant Derek L. Shanfield was part of the 2nd |
11 | Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division and the |
12 | II Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Camp Lejeune, North |
13 | Carolina. |
14 | (7) Sergeant Derek L. Shanfield was awarded the Marine |
15 | Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, |
16 | the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global |
17 | War on Terror Medal, the Purple Heart, the NATO Non-Article 5 |
18 | Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Sea Service Deployment |
19 | Ribbon and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal. |
20 | (8) Sergeant Derek L. Shanfield served his country with |
21 | honor and distinction as a member of the United States |
22 | Marines and is the first service member from Cambria County |
23 | to die in Operation Enduring Freedom. |
24 | (b) Designation.--The bridge carrying Bridge Street (State |
25 | Route 4021) over Brubaker Run in the Borough of Hasting, Cambria |
26 | County, is hereby designated as the Sergeant Derek Lee Shanfield |
27 | Memorial Bridge. |
28 | (c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and |
29 | maintain appropriate signs to indicate the designation under |
30 | subsection (b) to traffic in both directions. |

2 | This act shall take effect in 60 days. |
