  Whereas IBM was incorporated in the State of New York on June
16, 1911, as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Co. (C-T-R), a
consolidation of the Computing Scale Co. of America, The
Tabulating Machine Co. and The International Time Recording Co.
of New York; and
  Whereas C-T-R adopted the name International Business Machines
Corporation in 1924, whose acronym (IBM) has become one of the
most recognized corporate names in the world; and
  Whereas on June 16, 2011, IBM will celebrate its 100-year
anniversary, which is unmatched in the world of business and
technology; and
  Whereas IBM has served the citizens and businesses of Oregon
since 1935; and
  Whereas IBM employs more than 1,700 Oregonians in communities
throughout this state and over 400,000 employees around the
world; and
  Whereas countless corporations, political groups, technologies,
economic upheavals and scientific disciplines have risen and
disappeared throughout the decades, while IBM has persevered; and
  Whereas IBM's insights are critical to America's rising
leaders, who are charting their paths in a more global and
competitive world; and
  Whereas IBM has pursued progress over the last century by
pioneering the science of information, changing the way the world
works and reinventing the modern corporation; and
  Whereas IBM has always created technological discoveries that
transform lives, from the first electronic calculator and
programmable computer, to the chip powering the leading gaming
consoles, to the Watson computer smart enough to battle champions
on the popular game show, Jeopardy; and
  Whereas IBM has continued to reinvent itself as a modern
corporation through best practices around strong leadership,
management training and global growth; and
  Whereas IBM continues to shape the way the world works by
investing $6 billion annually in research and development; and
  Whereas IBM is working with governments across the country to
streamline and connect operations, citizen services and critical
efforts to detect waste, fraud and abuse using analytics during a
time when governments are expected to do more with less; and
  Whereas IBM is supporting growing cities around the world by
providing solutions for smarter cities through efforts to reduce
traffic congestion and resulting air pollution, improve access to
and the quality of education, improve energy sources and manage
power more intelligently; and
  Whereas IBM recently finished a project with the City of
Portland to create a system thinking tool to support high level
planning; and
  Whereas IBM continues to serve the State of Oregon, our
businesses and citizens as a respected partner; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:

  That we, the members of the Seventy-sixth Legislative Assembly,
commemorate IBM on its 100th anniversary and convey our warmest
regards for its continued success.
