Assembly Resolution No. 926 BY: M. of A. Rules (Joyner) MEMORIALIZING Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim May 2022, as Preeclampsia Awareness Month in the State of New York WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize official months that are set aside to increase awareness of serious pregnancy complications that affect the lives of citizens of New York State; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim May 2022, as Preeclampsia Awareness Month in the State of New York, in conjunction with the observance of National Preeclampsia Awareness Month; and WHEREAS, Celebrated every year in May, Preeclampsia Awareness Month draws attention to the fact that at least 5-8% of all pregnancies are affected by preeclampsia, which is characterized by high blood pressure, the presence of protein in the urine, and swelling in the mother's legs, feet, and hands; and WHEREAS, Preeclampsia can range from mild to severe and usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy in women whose blood pressure had been normal; left untreated, it can lead to serious, even fatal, complications for both mother and baby; and WHEREAS, Despite patient advocacy, the efforts of researchers, scientists and clinicians, and millions of dollars investment in seeking its prevention, the rate of preeclampsia in the United States has increased 25% in the last two decades and is a leading cause of maternal and infant illness and death; and WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater awareness of this serious health condition, and more must be done to educate, support and engage the community, improve healthcare practices, and find a cure; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim May 2022, as Preeclampsia Awareness Month in the State of New York, and to urge the citizens of this great Empire State to learn about the causes, symptoms, diagnoses and treatments for this condition; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to The Honorable Kathy Hochul, Governor of the State of New York.
