Senate Resolution No. 12132 BY: Senator AKSHAR COMMEMORATING the 75th Anniversary of Binghamton University WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and commend those institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose exemplary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate an enduring pursuit of excellence in higher education for the youth of this noble Empire State; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Binghamton University; and WHEREAS, Binghamton University was originally launched on June 6, 1946, as the two-year school called Triple Cities College of Syracuse University, and was located at Colonial Hall in Endicott, New York; and WHEREAS, The first convocation was held on September 28, 1946, and two days later, students attended classes for the first time; and WHEREAS, In 1950, the University joined the State University of New York (SUNY) system and changed its name to Harpur College; and WHEREAS, During the 1960s, the University completed its move to the current Vestal campus, was named one of four SUNY University Centers, and the School of Nursing opened; two decades later, it was renamed the Decker School of Nursing, and in 2019, it became Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences with the addition of programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language pathology; and WHEREAS, In 1970, the School of Management was established and in 1979, the School of General Studies and Professional Education was formed through the merger of programs; after changing its name to the School of Education and Human Development in 1987, it again underwent a reorganization and name change in 2006, becoming the College of Community and Public Affairs (CCPA) and the Graduate School of Education; and WHEREAS, In 2007, CCPA moved into its new facility, the Binghamton University Downtown Center, and 10 years later, the Graduate School of Education was incorporated into CCPA as the Department of Teaching, Learning and Educational Leadership; and WHEREAS, The Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science arose from the School of Advanced Technology in 1983, and became the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science in 2020; and WHEREAS, The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences was launched in 2017, and the next year, it moved from the main Vestal campus to the new Health Sciences Campus in Johnson City, New York; and WHEREAS, In 2019, Binghamton University earned R1 status, joining an elite group of only 131 institutions of higher education nationwide to earn that designation by the Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education; and WHEREAS, From its humble beginnings, Binghamton University has grown from its first class of 876 students, mostly GIs returning from the war, to more than 18,000 students, now including bachelor's, master's and doctoral students; and WHEREAS, The University of Binghamton has developed a strong footprint in downtown Binghamton with the Innovative Technologies Complex which houses the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science as well as the Center of Excellence, the University Downtown Center in Binghamton which houses the College of Community and Public Affairs, and the Health Sciences Center in Johnson City which houses the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, as well as the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences; the buildings and areas of the University now comprise close to 970 acres; and WHEREAS, Under the visionary guidance of President Harvey Stenger, the University of Binghamton has a total impact of $1.27 billion on the Binghamton MSA regional economy, supporting more than 12,500 jobs by its spending activities, and total impact of $1.64 billion on the New York State economy, supporting more than 15,000 jobs throughout the state; and WHEREAS, Known as the "Public Ivy" and as a premier public University in the Northeast, Binghamton University stands proud and prominent, always looking to the future and the needs of those it serves; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Binghamton University, noting the propriety of its goals, the constancy of its commitment and the significance of its accomplishments in preparing the youth of today and leaders of tomorrow; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Harvey Stenger, President, Binghamton University.
