Senate Resolution No. 2857 BY: Senator GAUGHRAN CONGRATULATING Douglas and Susanne Goldstein upon the occasion of their retirement after 62 years as owners and operators of Charles of Glen Cove hardware store WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the significant milestones in the distinguished careers of esteemed residents of this noble Empire State, and to commemorate the long histories of certain family-owned business endeavors, which are the cornerstone of economic success in this great Empire State; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Douglas and Susanne Goldstein upon the occasion of their retirement after 62 years as owners and operators of Charles of Glen Cove hardware store; and WHEREAS, Douglas and Susanne Goldstein and their daughter Kristin Goldstein will close the doors of Charles of Glen Cove, one of the only old-fashioned hardware stores left on the North Shore of Long Island, for the very last time on Thursday, February 20, 2020; and WHEREAS, Since the 1950s, Charles of Glen Cove has been a fixture of downtown Glen Cove, New York, and has always strived to be the most complete store on the North Shore; in 1958, it was taken over by Douglas Goldstein's father, Fred, who, encouraged his customers to "buy with confidence"; and WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of Fred Goldstein, this family-run and operated hardware store thrived and prospered; after his father's death in the late 1980s, Douglas Goldstein took over the helm of the business, and his wife, Susanne, joined him in this venture in 1999; and WHEREAS, Since they took over the store decades ago, Douglas and Susanne Goldstein have put their minds and hearts into operating Charles of Glen Cove; they were committed to making customer service their number one priority, and took the time to greet each and every one of their customers with a cheerful greeting and a warm smile; and WHEREAS, Douglas and Susanne Goldstein also strived to retain the store's traditional charm, with its original wood floors and a 50-year-old crank cash register; their loyal customers enjoyed the personal service, and loved to walk up and down the aisles, whether it was looking through the international bird house collection, searching for bolts, or perusing the many antiques scattered throughout the store; and WHEREAS, Kristin Goldstein joined the family-owned business 12 years ago, and has been an important and vital part of its success ever since; she was always available to lend a hand, and with a keen eye and a can-do mentality, she fixed numerous lamps, wheel barrows, hose reels and fans for customers in record time; and WHEREAS, Kristin Goldstein has always been a dynamic force in the store, and will be remembered for her caring personality, and for her delicious cookies and cakes which she shared with her loyal customers; and WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to congratulate Douglas and Susanne Goldstein upon the occasion of their retirement after 62 years as owners and operators of Charles of Glen Cove hardware store, and to wish them well in their future endeavors; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Douglas and Susanne Goldstein, and Kristin Goldstein.
