        MEMORIALIZING Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim
        October  2020,  as Information Literacy Month in the
        State of New York

  WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in participating in
months of observation of significant issues; and

  WHEREAS, This  Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to  memorialize
Governor  Andrew  M.  Cuomo  to  proclaim  October  2020, as Information
Literacy Month in the  State  of  New  York,  in  conjunction  with  the
observance of National Information Literacy Month; and

  WHEREAS, Information literacy provides the tools and skills to find,
evaluate,   and  use  credible  information  from  all  sources  in  our
constantly evolving world; and

  WHEREAS, When taught at an early age and reinforced  in  educational
institutions,  information  literacy  can  lead our citizens to a deeper
appreciation for respecting the authorship of  all  information  through
proper  attribution,  in  order  to promote a more cooperative and civil
community; and

  WHEREAS,  The  ability  to  search,  find,  decipher,  and   analyze
different   forms  of  information  is  a  key  component  in  effective
decision-making across  various  financial,  medical,  educational,  and
industrial fields; and

  WHEREAS,  Information  literacy, as taught in schools and libraries,
is a crucial part of education and will expose students to analytic  and
research   practices   that   will  better  prepare  them  for  changing
technologies; and

  WHEREAS,  Individuals  who  are   comfortable   working   with   the
informational  resources available in the digital world are able to seek
highly skilled jobs and compete at high levels in  the  global  economy;
and

  WHEREAS,   Information   literacy  encourages  individuals  to  draw
conclusions, make informed decisions, and apply knowledge to  using  new
technology concepts; it also supports creative thinking that may develop
innovative products and processes using technology; and

  WHEREAS, Using information acquired through technology to understand
human,  cultural,  and  societal issues promotes an informed and engaged
citizenry; and

  WHEREAS, Through public awareness, the State of New  York  seeks  to
remind citizens, employers, government agencies, and institutions of the
importance  of  information  literacy  for  economic  prosperity, social
cohesion, educational opportunity, and an enhanced quality of life; now,
therefore, be it

  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its  deliberations  to
memorialize  Governor  Andrew  M.  Cuomo  to  proclaim  October 2020, as
Information Literacy Month in the State of New York; and be it further

  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the  State  of
New York.
