Senate Resolution No. 2643

        MOURNING   the   death  of  Angela  J.  Filippone,
        distinguished citizen  and  devoted  member  of  her
        community

  WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens  of  the  State  of New York whose lifework and civic endeavors
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and

  WHEREAS, Angela J. Filippone of Buffalo, New York died on  March  2,
2024; and

  WHEREAS,  Angela J. Filippone was raised in Angola, New York, by her
parents Louis and Lena Chiappone  alongside  her  cousins,  nieces,  and
nephews; and

  WHEREAS,  Working  in  government  for  over  50  years,  Angela  J.
Filippone started her career by serving on the Buffalo Common Council as
an elected delegate in 1976 and 1988, breaking through the glass ceiling
to become the first Italian-American woman to be  elected  to  the  city
council; and

  WHEREAS,  As a testament to her accomplishments, Erie County honored
Angela J. Filippone as "Woman of the Year" in 2004; and

  WHEREAS, Angela J. Filippone served  as  a  public  liaison  to  the
former  County  Executive  Joel A. Giambra until her retirement in 2006;
and

  WHEREAS, Truly devoted to her community, Angela J. Filippone enjoyed
volunteering her time to Tonawanda Town Clerk Marguerite Greco; and

  WHEREAS, Since July 2023, Angela  J.  Filippone's  career  has  been
honored  and  displayed  in  an  exhibit  highlighting  impactful  local
Italian-American government leaders at the Italian  Cultural  Center  of
Buffalo;  her  achievement  is  further commemorated with a brick on the
walkway of the center; and

  WHEREAS, Instrumental in opening doors for women after  her,  Angela
J.  Filippone had a sense of what people needed and knew how to convince
others  in  order  get what she needed for her district; she established
many firsts, like the Italian festival which was located on  Connecticut
Street; and

  WHEREAS, Angela J. Filippone distinguished herself in her profession
and  by  her  sincere  dedication  and  substantial  contribution to the
welfare of her community; and

  WHEREAS, Angela J. Filippone's commitment  to  excellence,  and  her
spirit  of  humanity,  carried  over  into  all  fields  of  enterprise,
including charitable and civic endeavors; and

  WHEREAS, Angela J. Filippone is survived by her husband,  Salvatore;
her   children,   Randall,   Gregg,  and  the  late  Marc-Jon;  and  her
grandchildren, Ashlee McKean, Randall S., Andrew, and Haley Norton; and

  WHEREAS,  Armed  with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Angela J. Filippone leaves behind a legacy which  will  long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
she served and befriended; now, therefore, be it

  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death  of  Angela  J.  Filippone,  distinguished  citizen  and
devoted member of her community; and be it further

  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Angela J. Filippone.
