BACALLES, BURLING, CALHOUN, CROUCH, HAWLEY, OAKS, RAIA, SPANO, TEDISCO, WEISEN- BERG -- read once and referred to the Committee on Higher Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to creating the jobs for the twenty-first century tuition assistance grant program THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: 1 Section 1. This act shall be known and may be cited as the "Jobs for 2 the Twenty-First Century Tuition Assistance Grant Program". 3 S 2. The education law is amended by adding a new section 667-d to 4 read as follows: 5 S 667-D. TUITION ASSISTANCE GRANT PROGRAM. 1. IN CALCULATING THE MAXI- 6 MUM AWARD OF AID UNDER THE TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM, STUDENTS WHO 7 AGREE TO PURSUE A DEGREE IN MATHEMATICS, THE PHYSICAL SCIENCES, OR ENGI- 8 NEERING SHALL RECEIVE AN ADDITIONAL GRANT EQUAL TO TWENTY PERCENT OF 9 THEIR TUITION ASSISTANCE AWARD. SUCH AWARDS SHALL BE APPLIED RETROAC- 10 TIVELY TO STUDENTS WHO SWITCH INTO SUCH MAJORS. IN THE EVENT THAT A 11 STUDENT ALREADY RECEIVES THE MAXIMUM AUTHORIZED TUITION ASSISTANCE 12 AWARD, SUCH STUDENT WILL RECEIVE A STIPEND IN THE AMOUNT EQUAL TO THE 13 ADDITIONAL GRANT AWARD. 14 2. ALL STUDENTS AGREEING TO PARTICIPATE IN THE TUITION ASSISTANCE 15 GRANT PROGRAM SHALL SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THE HIGHER EDUCATION SERVICES 16 CORPORATION IN WHICH HE OR SHE COMMITS TO COMPLETE A DEGREE IN THE 17 APPROVED MAJORS. IF A STUDENT FAILS TO RECEIVE HIS OR HER DEGREE IN AN 18 APPROVED MAJOR WITHIN SIX YEARS OF THE INITIAL AWARD, THE STATE MAY 19 REQUIRE SUCH STUDENT TO REIMBURSE THE STATE AN AMOUNT EQUAL TO THE ADDI- 20 TIONAL GRANT AWARDED PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION. 21 S 3. This act shall take effect on January 1, 2010, provided, however, 22 that the higher education services corporation is authorized and 23 directed to promulgate any necessary rule or regulation on or before 24 such effective date.
