EPSTEIN, SEAWRIGHT, SAYEGH, SIMON, REYES, DICK- ENS, MAMDANI, AUBRY, GIBBS, CRUZ, JACKSON, GONZALEZ-ROJAS, CARROLL -- read once and referred to the Committee on Corporations, Authorities and Commissions AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to directing the chancel- lor of the New York city school district to establish a student fare program The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. Section 2590-h of the education law is amended by adding a 2 new subdivision 57 to read as follows: 3 57. Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, to 4 establish, in consultation with the metropolitan transportation authori- 5 ty, a student fare program. Such program shall provide three free fares 6 between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. each weekday for every student in the 7 city school district who attends kindergarten through twelfth grade and 8 who resides a half mile or more from the school such student attends. 9 § 2. This act shall take effect on the first of July next succeeding 10 the date on which it shall have become a law; provided, however, that 11 the amendments to section 2590-h of the education law made by section 12 one of this act shall not affect the expiration of such section and 13 shall be deemed repealed therewith. Effective immediately, the addi- 14 tion, amendment and/or repeal of any rule or regulation necessary for 15 the implementation of this act on its effective date are authorized to 16 be made and completed on or before such effective date.
