An Act concerning the provision of certain medications to female inmates and supplementing Title 30 of the Revised Statutes.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. a. The Commissioner of Corrections shall provide to a female inmate, upon request, a single dosage of Levonorgestrel.
b. An inmate who has requested Levonorgestrel pursuant to subsection a. of this section shall be permitted to consult with a licensed physician or other appropriate medical professional.
c. To the extent possible, a generic substitution of Levonorgestrel shall be provided to a female inmate under the provisions of this section.
2. This act shall take effect on the first day of the third month after enactment.
This bill permits a female inmate in a State correctional facility to request a single dosage of Levonorgestrel, more commonly known as Plan B.
Plan B is a medication that prevents pregnancy if taken within 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse or birth control failure. A prescription is not required to obtain Plan B.
The bill permits an inmate who has requested Plan B to consult with a physician or other appropriate medical professional. The bill also requires, to the extent possible, that a female inmate be provided with a generic substitution of Levonorgestrel.
