CHAPTER 35

 

An Act designating the Department of Environmental Protection State office building in the City of Trenton as the "Richard J. Sullivan Building."

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    The Legislature finds and declares that:

     a.     Richard J. Sullivan was the first Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection for the State of New Jersey;

     b.    Commissioner Sullivan spearheaded environmental protections that established New Jersey as a national leader in coastal protection, land preservation, and pollution control and that led to improvements to the public health and the State's environment;

     c.     As Commissioner, Sullivan helped establish Liberty State Park, which features a 36-acre salt marsh named the Richard J. Sullivan Natural Area;

     d.    In addition, after Sullivan served as the Chairman of the Pinelands Commission under multiple governors, he was recognized for his significant contributions in 2001 when the Pineland Commission's Richard J. Sullivan Center for Environmental Policy and Education was named in his honor at the commission's headquarters;

     e.     Richard J. Sullivan was one of New Jersey's most respected conservationists and public leaders, dedicating his life to protecting our natural resources; and

     f.     It is appropriate that the Department of Environmental Protection State building located at 401 East State Street in the City of Trenton should bear the name of a man who, through his public service and leadership, provided a model of excellence and commitment for others that followed after him.

 

     2.    The Department of Environmental Protection State building located at 401 East State Street in the City of Trenton is designated as the "Richard J. Sullivan Building."

 

     3.    This act shall take effect immediately.
