SYNOPSIS
Urges educational institutions in NJ to include veterans and active service members in discussions about military, military values, and leadership.

An Assembly Resolution urging educational institutions in New Jersey to include veterans and active service members in discussions about the military, military values, and leadership.
Whereas, Learning about the military, military values, and leadership from veterans and active service members can be a unifying opportunity for students from every background and can help a student to better understand and appreciate active service members, veterans, and fallen heroes; and
Whereas, Educational institutions, including K-12 schools and institutions of higher education, have a unique opportunity to foster a relationship between a student and service members of the United States Armed Forces; and
Whereas, Service members live up to military values every day by exemplifying loyalty, respect, integrity, and selfless service, all of which are values that should be instilled in a student; and
Whereas, Learning military values can teach a student to adhere to strong moral principles and encourage a student to make choices with integrity; and
Whereas, A student may not know a veteran or service member and having the opportunity to learn about the selfless service of the members of our country's armed forces can foster a culture of respect and appreciation for active service members, as well as veterans and fallen heroes; and
Whereas, Discussions about the military with veterans and active service members may inspire a student to enlist and become a part of the next generation of dedicated military personnel; and
Whereas, With over 350,000 veterans and 14 active military bases in New Jersey, students in the State should have ample opportunities to learn from the dedicated service members who protect the nation's freedom every day; and
Whereas, The State of New Jersey celebrates "Veterans Month" during the month of November and veterans and active service members should be included in educational lessons on the military and military values in educational institutions during "Veterans Month"; and
Whereas, Due to the strong values of the nation's veterans and active service members, it is altogether fitting and proper for this House to urge educational institutions in New Jersey to include veterans and active service members in discussions about the military, military values, and leadership; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. This House urges educational institutions in New Jersey to include veterans and active service members in discussions about the military, military values, and leadership.
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Commissioner of Education, the executive county superintendent of schools in each county of the State, and the Secretary of Higher Education.
STATEMENT
This resolution urges educational institutions in New Jersey to include veterans and active service members in discussions about the military, military values, and leadership.
Learning about the military, military values, and leadership from veterans and active service members can help a student to better understand and appreciate active service members, veterans, and fallen heroes. Educational institutions have a unique opportunity to foster a relationship between a student and service members of the United States Armed Forces through discussions, events, and campus involvement.
Veterans and active service members possess qualities that should be instilled in a student, including the ability to lead by example, adaptability, loyalty, and respect. Learning military values from a veteran or active service member can foster a culture of teamwork, excellence, and respect within schools.
Learning from a veteran or active service member about the selfless service of the members of our country's armed forces can teach a student to respect and appreciate active service members, as well as veterans and fallen heroes. Lessons on the military may lead a student to enlist in the United States Armed Forces, thereby inspiring the next generation of dedicated military personnel. November is "Veterans Month" in New Jersey and can be celebrated through educational lessons that include veterans and active service members in schools and higher education institutions across the State. Due to the strong values of the nation's veterans and active service members, it is altogether fitting and proper to urge educational institutions in New Jersey to include veterans and active service members in discussions about the military, military values, and leadership.
