SYNOPSIS

Requests federal government to provide funds to keep police, fire, and emergency medical service workers as a matter of public safety.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution requesting that the federal government provide additional funding to the State in order to keep police, fire, and emergency medical service workers employed as a matter of public safety.

Whereas, Police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical service workers are first responders who play a vital role in ensuring our homeland security; and

Whereas, New Jersey contains vital infrastructure including one of the country's largest airports and the country's third largest marine port; and

Whereas, Massive layoffs to local police, fire, and EMS units have already occurred with even more layoffs expected in the next year due to continued State and local budget constraints; and

Whereas, The State is facing unprecedented financial difficulties having faced a $10.7 billion budget deficit for FY 2011 and a projected $10.5 billion deficit for upcoming FY 2012; and

Whereas, The State is dealing with a 9.4% unemployment rate as of September 2010 according to the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics; and

Whereas, Police, fire, and EMS worker layoffs place the residents and public safety workers of New Jersey at greater risk; and

Whereas, The reduction in first responders leaves the State less capable of ensuring homeland security; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.  This House respectfully requests that the federal government provide additional funding to the State of New Jersey for the purpose of preserving the jobs of police, firefighters, and emergency medical service workers across the State as a matter of public safety.

     2.  Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to the President and Vice-President of the United States, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the majority and minority leaders of the United States Senate and United States House of Representatives, each member of the United States Congress elected from this State, and the Secretary of the United States Department of Homeland Security.

STATEMENT

This resolution requests that the federal government provide additional funding to the State in order to retain police, firefighter, and EMS jobs.  The State is facing severe reductions in public safety personnel as a result of dire budget constraints, which result in a less safe State with first responders who are less able to provide for our homeland security.
