STATEMENT

This joint resolution commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Armistice during World War I.  On April 6, 1917, the United States declared war against the German Empire and entered World War I. Nineteen months later, on November 11, 1918, an Armistice with Germany was signed, which lead to a cessation of hostilities among the Allied powers and Germany.  The year 2018 marked the 100th anniversary of the Armistice and the ceasefire during World War I.

The centennial of this historical event offers the State a unique opportunity to not only recognize the people, places, and events central to World War I, but also an opportunity to highlight the contributions of New Jerseyans in supporting the United States war efforts.  The State supported the United States in various ways including, the creation or enhancement of vital military training camps throughout the State, the production of wartime materials from many New Jersey manufacturers, and the signing of the "Knox-Porter Resolution" in Raritan, New Jersey on July 2, 1921, by President Warren Harding, which officially ratified the Treaty of Versailles and formally ended American's involvement in World War I.

Therefore, to demonstrate New Jersey's commitment to honoring the heroism and sacrifices of the United States Armed Forces, including constituents of this State, the 100th anniversary of the Armistice during World War I should be commemorated.
