Whereas, Gastroparesis is a chronic medical condition consisting of a partial paralysis of the stomach, resulting in food remaining in the stomach for an abnormally long period of time; and

Whereas, Gastroparesis can be a debilitating and sometimes life threatening medical condition for which there is no cure; and

Whereas, Symptoms of gastroparesis include nausea, vomiting, stomach fullness, the inability to finish a meal, severe dehydration, difficulty managing blood glucose levels, stomach obstruction, and malnutrition; and

Whereas, Treatments such as dietary measures, medications, procedures to maintain nutrition, and surgery can reduce but not eliminate symptoms of gastroparesis; and

Whereas, Gastroparesis is a relatively common medical condition with an increased rate of incidence which affects an estimated five million Americans; and

Whereas, Factors causing gastroparesis may include long-standing diabetes, complications from surgeries, or other illnesses, such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease; and

Whereas, Gastroparesis can strike at any age and is four times more likely to affect women than men; and

Whereas, Gastroparesis is a poorly understood condition, and delayed diagnosis, treatment, and management of this condition are frequent challenges faced by those affected by gastroparesis; and

Whereas, Gastroparesis creates a significant burden on individuals, families, the community, our economy, and the U.S. healthcare system; and

Whereas, It is fitting and proper that the Legislature designate the month of August as "Gastroparesis Awareness Month" in order to provide an opportunity to raise awareness about this medical condition and to encourage increased research into effective treatments for people affected by gastroparesis; now, therefore,
