SYNOPSIS

Designates October of each year as "Disability Employment Awareness Month."

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Joint Resolution permanently designating October as "Disability Employment Awareness Month" in New Jersey.

Whereas, Americans with disabilities are entitled to the same rights and freedoms as any other citizen, including the right to dignity and respect in the workplace; and

Whereas, Too often, individuals with disabilities are eager to work but are unable to find a job because of red tape, discrimination, or employers who assume that people with disabilities are unable to work; and

Whereas, Federal and State laws, including the federal "Americans with Disabilities Act" and New Jersey's "Law Against Discrimination" have been essential in promoting the inclusion of individuals with disabilities into community life, including work; and

Whereas, There remain significant discriminatory obstacles to individuals with disabilities seeking employment; and

Whereas, Nationally, the labor force participation rate of individuals with disabilities is less than one third the rate of those without a disability, and the unemployment rate is more than twice as high for individuals with disabilities; and

Whereas, Removing the barriers that keep individuals with disabilities out of employment can benefit both those individuals, who will gain income, independence, and the satisfaction and self-esteem that comes from gainful employment; and

Whereas, Removing these impediments will also benefit employers, who become aware of the great talents that individuals with disabilities can bring to their organizations; and

Whereas, The United States Congress established October as "National Disability Employment Awareness Month" in 1988 to promote public awareness of disability employment nationwide; and

Whereas, It is altogether fitting and proper that New Jersey join in this national effort by honoring the work of New Jersey residents with disabilities and raising public awareness of their contributions to this State; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    October of each year is designated as "Disability Employment Awareness Month" in New Jersey in order to increase public awareness of employment of individuals with disabilities, and promote the elimination of discriminatory obstacles to employment of people with disabilities.

     2.    The Governor is respectfully requested to issue an annual proclamation recognizing October as "Disability Employment Awareness Month" in New Jersey and calling upon public officials, the citizens of the State, and others to observe the month with appropriate activities and programs.

     3.    This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.
