     Requires construction of sidewalks along certain routes within certain radius of public schools.

An Act concerning sidewalk construction and supplementing Title 40 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    a.  A county or municipality, at the public expense, shall provide for the construction and maintenance of sidewalks, within a two-mile radius of an elementary public school and a two and one half-mile radius of a secondary public school, on all portions of the county's or the municipality's streets that are located along routes that are deemed hazardous using the criteria provided in section 2 of P.L.1999, c.310 (C.18A:39-1.5).

     b.    A county or municipality may use funds collected from permits, donations, county, federal, and State grants, and any other funds to provide for the construction and maintenance of sidewalks as required by subsection a. of this section.

     c.     As used in this section:

     "Public school" means a school in this State, under college grade, which derives its support entirely or in part from State and local government funds.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     Under the bill, a county or municipality, at the public expense, is to provide for the construction and maintenance of sidewalks within a two-mile radius of an elementary public school and a two and one half-mile radius of a secondary public school, on all portions of the county's or the municipality's streets that are located along hazardous routes that students use to walk to and from school.

     A county or municipality may use funds collected from permits, donations, county, federal, and State grants, and any other funds to provide for the construction and maintenance of sidewalks as required by the bill.
