SYNOPSIS

     Prohibits DOT from putting tolls on I-78 and I-80 and from transferring jurisdiction to independent authority or entity.

An Act concerning certain interstate highways and supplementing Title 27 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    a.  The Department of Transportation is hereby prohibited from charging and collecting any tolls for the use of Interstate Highway No. 78 or Interstate Highway No. 80 or any portion or any lane thereof.

     b.    The Department of Transportation is hereby prohibited from selling, leasing, or otherwise transferring jurisdiction over, Interstate Highway No. 78 or Interstate Highway No. 80 to any independent State authority, corporation, board, commission, or other autonomous public entity or private firm.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill prohibits the New Jersey Department of Transportation ("DOT") from charging and collecting tolls for the use of Interstates 78 or 80 or any portion or lane thereof.  DOT is further prohibited from selling, leasing, or otherwise transferring jurisdiction over, Interstates 78 or 80 to any independent State authority, corporation, board, commission, or other autonomous public entity or private firm.  This bill is in response to proposals being studied to toll New Jersey's State and Interstate Highways, through such methods as the use of High Occupancy Toll ("HOT") Lanes or Express Lanes.
