A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT to require the state board of education to develop and identify courses in computer programming and coding that can be offered as elective courses for middle school and high school students.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  G.S. 115C‑81 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:

"(e3)    Computer Programming Courses With Coding to Be Developed and Administered. – The State Board of Education shall develop and identify academically rigorous courses in computer programming and coding that can be offered as electives at the middle or high school level. These courses shall provide multiple opportunities for students to learn about the coding process."

SECTION 2.  This act is effective when it becomes law and applies beginning with the 2017‑2018 school year.
