Short Title:        Classroom Experience for School Personnel.

A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT TO GIVE CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE TO PROFESSIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOL EMPLOYEES WHO ARE NOT CLASSROOM TEACHERS.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  G.S. 115C‑47 is amended by adding a new subdivision to read:

"(18b)  To Enhance Professional Employees' Awareness of the Instructional Day. – Each local board of education shall adopt a policy to give classroom experience to professional employees who do not have daily contact with students to enhance the employees' awareness of classroom climate. This policy shall require the employees to deliver instruction or have other contact with students in classrooms during the instructional day. This policy may require the employees as a part of their regular duties to serve as substitute teachers in the classroom, teach model lessons in the classroom, assist teachers in the classroom, tutor individual students in the classroom, or provide other services in the classroom. This policy may provide for up to one renewal credit every five years per employee for these activities."

SECTION 2.  This act is effective when it becomes law and applies beginning with the 2011‑2012 school year.
