A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT authorizing cities to require businesses to register on an annual basis and to impose a registration fee.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  Article 8 of Chapter 160A of the General Statutes is amended by adding a new section to read as follows:

"§ 160A‑194.1.  Registration of businesses.

A city may by ordinance require any business operating within the city's corporate limits to register with the city on an annual basis. The registration information shall be used by the city only for the purpose of creating a contact database for police and fire departments, the provision of city services, and the enforcement of city ordinances. The city may impose an annual registration fee which shall not exceed fifty dollars ($50.00), and which shall be used only for the purpose of maintaining the contact database."

SECTION 2.  This act becomes effective June 30, 2015.
