MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE

2012 Regular Session

To: Rules

By: Senator(s) Jackson (32nd)

Senate Concurrent Resolution 615

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND SALUTING KEMPER COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL STAR AND MCDONALD'S ALL-AMERICAN DEVONTA POLLARD.

WHEREAS, Kemper County High School Basketball Senior Center/Forward Devonta Pollard scored 28 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked 10 shots (a triple double) as the "Wildcats" dominated Booneville 75-65 for the Class 3A State Title, the school's first State Title since 1992; and

WHEREAS, the Kemper County High School Dandy Dozen senior can check yet another item off his to-do list.  Less than a month after being named to the prestigious McDonald's All-American Game, Devonta Pollard reached another goal:  a State Championship.  Pollard, an obvious choice as the game's Most Valuable Player, scored his seventh triple-double of the season; and

WHEREAS, "We're going to retire his jersey," said Kemper County Coach Kelvin Young.  "The exposure he has brought to the school, the program and the county is just unbelievable"; and

WHEREAS, it was Kemper County's first State Title since 1992, two years before Pollard and the four other seniors were born; and

WHEREAS, Pollard has narrowed his college choices to Mississippi State, Alabama, Kentucky, Missouri, Texas and Georgetown.  In the Championship Game, Pollard finished the first half with 12 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks.  He altered several other shots while helping the Wildcats build a 19-10 first-quarter lead.  "He impacted the game more defensively than he did on offense," said Booneville Coach Michael Smith; and  WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we commend this dazzling Mississippi Basketball Star who has brought honor to his school, his community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and salute Kemper County High School Basketball Star and McDonald's All-American Devonta Pollard, who has broken records as a Center and Forward in the "Wildcats" 3A Championship season, and extend our best wishes to Devonta in his future collegiate career.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Devonta Pollard and his family, forwarded to Kemper County Coach Kelvin Young and Kemper High School Principal Calvin Melton and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
