Senate Concurrent Resolution 606

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE GULFPORT HIGH SCHOOL "ADMIRALS" BOYS SOCCER TEAM AND HEAD COACH HENRIK MADSEN FOR WINNING THE 2018 MHSAA CLASS 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, 2010 was the last year the Gulfport High School "Admirals" claimed the Class 6A Boys State Soccer Championship.  The third-ranked Admirals ended that Championship drought when they defeated top-ranked Madison Central on February 12, 2018, on the campus of Brandon High School.  Gulfport Head Coach Henrik Madsen said, "It's unbelievable to defeat a team like Madison Central that has so many State Championships.  We were definitely playing some real good soccer at the right part of the season.  This was our goal from the beginning"; and

WHEREAS, early goals in each half enabled Gulfport to win an MHSAA State Championship in boys soccer for only the second time with the 2-1 victory.  The win was made all the more impressive considering Madison Central had the home field advantage.  Its campus is located less than three miles from Ridgeland High School, the site of Saturday night's game.  Gulfport had to travel 173 miles.  The game winner came three minutes into the second half.  Christopher Bruni put a free kick from 40 yards out in front of the goal and Lucas Ragula headed it past the Madison Central goalie; and

WHEREAS, the victory could be considered an upset since Madison Central was top-ranked in the state according to MaxPreps and Gulfport was No. 3.  The Admirals did win a previous matchup, 2-0 at the 1-10/1-20 Classic.  The Admirals finished the season with an 11-game winning streak, during which they allowed only two goals; and

WHEREAS, the Gulfport High School 2018 Admirals Championship Team Roster is:  Gannon Key, Christopher Smith, Aj McNair, Ivo Jimenez, Matthew Wingerter, Lucas Ragula, Wallace (tres) Ladner, Caleb Bergman, Brian Perez, Joseph Cumberland, Miguel Hernandez, Mohamed Diallo, Joel Morales, Gavin Taylor, Jacob Johnson, Cason Lizana, Teddy Madsen, Matt Hagin, Adrien Melindez, Durron Myers, Carter Wilson, Hutson Rollins, Tate Myrick, Eli Cupp, Ashton Leblanc, Edwin Carranza, Christopher Bruni, Peyton Ladner, Ford Symmes, Aubrey Christian, Ethan Boles and London Ratlif; Head Coach Henrik Madsen; and Assistant Coaches:  Patrick Wadsworth, Fredy Clavijo, Shannon Boles, Brett Walton, Julian Varga and Cory Carlson; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Gulfport High School "Admirals" Boys Soccer Team and Head Coach Henrik Madsen for winning the 2018 MHSAA Class 6A State Championship, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Madsen for the team and Gulfport High School Principal Michael Lindsey, forwarded to the Harrison County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
