Senate Concurrent Resolution 593

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE H.W. BYERS HIGH SCHOOL "LADY LIONS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH JASON THOMPSON FOR WINNING THEIR THIRD CONSECUTIVE MHSAA CLASS 1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the H.W. Byers High School "Lady Lions" Girls Basketball Team claimed bragging rights for the second consecutive year on March 7, 2013, as the best team in Mississippi in Class 1A girls basketball; and

WHEREAS, H.W. Byers has been to the Mississippi Coliseum for the State Tournament seven consecutive seasons and won five Championships, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013.  The first two were in Class 2A and the last three were in Class 1A; and

WHEREAS, as Coach Jason Thompson will quickly tell you, it never gets old.  His H.W. Byers Girls Basketball Team continued their dominance winning their third consecutive Class 1A State Championship with a 63-41 victory over Hinds Agricultural High School at the Mississippi Coliseum.  It was the fifth time in six years that Coach Jason Thompson and the Lady Lions have taken a Gold Ball back to the small community of Mt. Pleasant, 15 miles north of Holly Spring; and

WHEREAS, Justice Martin scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Lady Lions (28-5), ranking No. 1 all season in 1A.  She scored six of her points in the first quarter to help the Lady Lions sprint out to a commanding 18-4 lead.  Richenda Crutcher scored 12 points and Abria Gulledge had 10 for Byers.  Precious Rogers finished with six points, eight rebounds and seven assists.  Sha Dai Nolen and Madison McCreless, who played despite a broken bone in her foot suffered in the playoffs, also scored six points; and

WHEREAS, "It's just a true testament to the players believing in each other.  When I first started (12 years ago), we were everybody's doormat," said Coach Jason Thompson, who has built a dynasty at the Marshall County School on Highway 72.  Byers moves up to 2A next year, which will bring a new challenge; and

WHEREAS, the 2012-2013 H.W. Byers High School "Lady Lions" Roster is as follows:  Alayna McClure, Jequira Thompson, Precious Rogers, Keoasha Moore, Laniqua Collins, Asha Glover, Richenda Crutcher, Sha Dai Nolen, Madison McCreless, Lanchai Collins, Autezia Sellers, Jasmine Bryson, Justice Martin, Abria Gulledge and Kadejar Moore, and Head Coach Jason Thompson; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we salute this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the H.W. Byers High School "Lady Lions" Girls Basketball Team and Coach Jason Thompson for winning their third consecutive Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 1A State Championship, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future athletic and academic success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Jason Thompson and H.W. Byers High School Principal Sonya Cross, forwarded to the Marshall County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
