A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED, ON THE OCCASION OF ITS POLICY IMPACT "2017 AKA DAY" AT THE MISSISSIPPI STATE CAPITOL TO PROMOTE ADVOCACY AND TAKE ACTION FOR CIVIL RIGHTS, SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT INITIATIVES.

     WHEREAS, on February 8, 2017, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, convened in Jackson, Mississippi, for the 22nd consecutive year, to participate in the "2017 Alpha Kappa Alpha AKA Day" at the Mississippi State Capitol to receive a legislative update, promote advocacy, and take action as part of their commitment to educational enrichment, civil rights, social justice, political awareness, and commitment to statewide civic engagement; and

     WHEREAS, there are seven Alpha Kappa Alpha women who serve as members of the Mississippi Legislature, which include Representatives Sonya Williams-Barnes, Alyce G. Clarke, Angela Cockerham, Debra Gibbs, LaTaisha Jackson, and Sara R. Thomas, and Senator Tammy Witherspoon, who along with other members of the Legislature, discuss with those attending the event, the status of legislation relating to the public policy agenda and the program initiatives of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; and

     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the first Greek letter Sorority for college-educated African-American women, has grown from nine visionary women in one undergraduate chapter in 1908, on the campus of Howard University, to a dynamic international nonprofit, nonpartisan organization of more than 280,000 members in 1000 chapters throughout the United States and nine other countries; and

     WHEREAS, the South Eastern Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha consists of almost 6,000 members in 104 chapters with 32 of those chapters being located in Mississippi, where these chapters work independently and collaboratively to embrace and implement the International Program Initiatives of Educational Enrichment, Health Promotion, Family Strengthening, Environment Ownership, and Global Impact to improve the lives of individuals and positively impact this great state, this nation, and the world; and

     WHEREAS, these hard-working, selfless members include judges, lawyers, teachers, State Senators, State Representatives, physicians, homemakers, school superintendents, aldermen, mayors, and other outstanding, dynamic women from all walks of life who have inspired women all over the world to reach new heights in programs and service to humanity; and

     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, is a force for good that transcends cultures and diplomatic borders and is dedicated to transforming lives and positively impacting communities through established international programs that are innovative, measurable, and socially relevant; and

     WHEREAS, Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson serves as the 29th International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and Mary B. Conner serves as the 25th South Eastern Regional Director; and

     WHEREAS, "AKA Day at the Capitol" is a national political awareness initiative for the sorority to promote its public policy agenda with thousands of members of this extraordinary sorority traveling to visit with state lawmakers around the country; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to acknowledge noteworthy and enduring contributions of such organizations as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, where its members devote their talents, time, and energy in excess of 2 million hours of volunteer community service annually advancing effective initiatives fostering a better quality of life for all individuals, especially the individuals of the great State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commemorate Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, on the observance of the "2017 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Day" at the Capitol for their outstanding service to the community under the program initiative, "Launching New Dimensions of Service, through the C4 Power of the Pearl to Connect, Communicate, Celebrate, and Collaborate" to fulfill the sorority's mission of rendering "service to all mankind."

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the committee representatives of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, forwarded to the Mississippi chapters, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
