MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE

2017 Regular Session

To: Rules

By: Senator(s) Jackson (32nd), Barnett, Frazier, Jackson (11th), Norwood

Senate Concurrent Resolution 578

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE KEMPER COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL "WILDCATS" FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH CHRIS JONES FOR WINNING THEIR FIRST MHSAA CLASS 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, Kemper County High School "Wildcats" Football Team secured its first State Championship by beating Charleston 12-8 at Davis Wade Stadium at Mississippi State on December 3, 2016; and

WHEREAS, for a team that entered the game averaging 36.7 points per game, it was the Wildcats' defense that stood out.  Kemper County (15-1) made several key stops to halt drives; Charleston converted only once in five attempts on fourth down; and

WHEREAS, in 2013, Kemper County was a feel-good story, making a playoff appearance after a one-win season.  The next year, it took things a couple steps further, reaching the State Semifinals.  Then last year, the Wildcats finished 10-3.  "I am so proud of this win," Coach Chris Jones said. "That's because you have to find other ways"; and

WHEREAS, quarterback Eric Clark completed 9 of 20 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns.  Clayton caught five of those passes, including both touchdowns, and had 229 yards.  Fittingly, this was the way the duo dominated all season.  Clark threw 47 touchdowns heading into the game and Clayton had caught 28 of them.  They have been throwing together for a long time and it just comes natural; and

WHEREAS, when it was over and despite it was already raining, players drenched Coach Jones with a Gatorade bath.  The Coach then jogged around the field, embracing all the players on his team he could make eye contact with before clutching the trophy.  This victory put Kemper County on the map; and

WHEREAS, the 2016 Kemper County High School "Wildcats" Football Roster is:  Gus Nave, Jr., CB, WR; Jameez Sims, QB; Tyler McNeil, CB; Marcus Fox, DB; Rondarius Gowdy, RB; Deandre Smith, DE; Eric Clark, Jr., QB; Senous Williams, S, RB; Johnny Medcalf, TE, DE; Jadus Clayton, WR, CB; Rodrick Williams, Jr., WR; Quanderius Bohannon, WR; Tyren Glaspie, CB; Jonathan Pollock, WR; De'onte Rush, DE, QB; Jalan Houston, WR; Deonta Culpepper, WR; Ke'Shod Grady, WR; Jarious Love, CB; Jomal Odom, DB; Chandler Roberts, RB; Recadre' Moore, DE; D'anthony O'Neal, DE; Ricardo Windham, RB; Christian Rush, RB; Tra'kalab Welch, TE, OL; Trajan Tanksley, DE, DT; Dorsey Bourrage, DE; Gary Bourrage, LB; Wadarius Perry, LB; Tracy Cole, LB, DE, QB; Simeon Houston, DE; Adrain Moore, RB; Ray'onta Lucas, S; Phillip Campbell, DL; Christopher McCray, DT; Jordan Campbell, G; Jamal Jackson, G; Jamarius Chamberlin, DT; Perryon McClelland, DT, C; Marvin Gale, OL; Wesley Granger, DL; Brandon Hooks, DE; Anterrio Madison, G; Jaylin Clemons, OL; Rodriques McMiller, OL; Marion Drummond, OL; Stephen Cole, T; Quadreikas Clemons, DT; John Dale, T; Orlando Bourrage, OL; Jared Gibbs, WR; Jaquonte Jenkins, DB; Ke'Ontay Love, C, DT; Quadarious Brown, DT; and Christopher Little, Jr., DT; Coach Chris Jones; and Assistant Coaches:  Lonnie Phipps; Willie Gandy, Troy Savell, Dred Phillips, Rico McCann, Tevin Nichols, Ray Westerfield, Algie Cole, Jerrell McCallum, LaQuintis Horne and Mike Castro; and Trainers Fred Yates and Kendrick Hull; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Kemper County High School "Wildcats" Football Team and Head Coach Chris Jones for winning their first MHSAA Class 3A State Championship and extend to the players, coaches, families and sponsors our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Chris Jones for the team, forwarded to Kemper County High School Principal Kathi Wilson and the Kemper County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
