A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND HONORING THE ADVOCACY AND SERVICES PROVIDED BY AARP MISSISSIPPI ON THE OCCASION OF "AARP DAY AT THE CAPITOL" ON FEBRUARY 9, 2017.

     WHEREAS, AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with more than 40 million members that is dedicated to improving the quality of life of people who are 50 years of age or older; and

     WHEREAS, Ethel Percy Andrus, a retired educator from California, founded AARP in 1958 to promote independence, dignity and purpose for older people in the United States and to encourage current and future generations "to serve, not to be served"; and

     WHEREAS, the vision of AARP is "a society in which everyone ages with dignity and purpose and in which AARP helps people fulfill their goals and dreams."  The mission of AARP is to enhance the quality of life of all people as they age, to promote positive social change, and to deliver value to its members through information, advocacy and service; and

     WHEREAS, the nonpartisan advocacy activities of AARP help millions of people participate in the legislative, judicial and administrative processes of the United States.  AARP is a trusted source of reliable information on health, financial security and other issues important to people 50 years of age and older.  AARP provides an opportunity for volunteerism and service so that its millions of members can better their families, communities and the nation; and

     WHEREAS, AARP Mississippi is working to help Americans 50+ in Mississippi live life to the fullest.  They advocate for members on critical priorities, such as strengthening Social Security and Medicaid, protecting seniors' access to their doctors, and ensuring all Americans have independence and choice as they age.  AARP serves as a one-stop resource for information on the age 50+ population in Mississippi and public opinion research.  In addition to serving as a clearinghouse for information about older Americans, they also offer programs and tools that help Americans age 50+ make the best decisions about their health and financial security; and

     WHEREAS, Mississippi at a glance:

     ·  Total number of AARP members in Mississippi:  285,000;

     ·  Social Security Beneficiaries:  632,191;

     ·  Retirees:  360,086;

     ·  Widow(er)s:  49,469;

     ·  Disabled workers:  132,736;

     ·  Social Security recipients who rely on Social Security for 90% or more of their income:  30.8%;

     ·  Social Security recipients who rely on Social Security for 50% or more of their income:  55.2%;

     ·  Total Medicare Beneficiaries:  more than 523,600;

     ·  Percent of Medicaid long-term care spending for home- and community-based services (HCBS):  19.1%;

     ·  Percent of Medicaid long-term care spending for nursing homes:  80.9%;

     ·  Estimated number of family caregivers at any given time during the year:  501,000;

     ·  Unpaid contributions of family caregivers are valued at:  $5.2 Billion; and

     WHEREAS, AARP is committed to improving the quality of life for all older people in Mississippi and in the United States and helping people of all generations fulfill their goals and dreams:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and honor the advocacy and services provided by AARP Mississippi and State Director Kimberly L. Campbell, Esq., on the occasion of "AARP Day At the Capitol" on February 9, 2017, and extend our best wishes on this auspicious occasion.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to AARP State Director Kimberly Campbell and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
