MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE

2019 Regular Session

To: Rules

By: Senator(s) Turner-Ford, Barnett, Dearing, Jackson (15th), Jackson (32nd)

Senate Concurrent Resolution 554

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING STARKVILLE HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH KRISTIE WILLIAMS FOR BEING NAMED 2017-2018 MISSISSIPPI COACH OF THE YEAR BY THE NFHS COACHES ASSOCIATION.

WHEREAS, we join the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) in recognizing a Mississippi high school sports leader and winner.  Starkville High School Girls Basketball Coach Kristie Williams has been recognized for being a leader and a winner.  The NFHS Coaches Association has awarded the 2017-2018 Mississippi "Coach of the Year for Girls Basketball" to Starkville High School Girls Basketball Coach Kristie Williams; and

WHEREAS, Kristie was nominated by the Mississippi High School Activities Association.  She applied with the other State Championship Coaches for Mississippi in early November 2018 to complete information about themselves and their accomplishments; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Jackets have back-to-back Class 6A State Championships under Coach Williams and are off to an 11-3 record so far this season with a 2-0 mark in Class 6A, Region 3; and

WHEREAS, one would be hard-pressed to find someone with roots planted deeper at Starkville High School than Kristie Williams.  As Head Coach of the Lady Yellow Jackets, Williams has built an even stronger basketball tradition at the school than was there when she was a part of the last State Championship as a player in the early 1990s.  The 2017 season was one of the best in the program's existence as Williams led her team to an undefeated 31-0 record into the Class 6A State Championship Game.  In her last four seasons alone, Williams is 100-16 and has won 23-straight regular season district games dating back to the 2013-2014 season.  For three-straight seasons, Starkville made it to Jackson as a final eight participant.  The fact that her team had the resilience to reel off 31-consecutive wins in 2017 was evidence enough of the hard work her players put in.  Williams continues to have a passion to bring her school another State Title and she wants to see her players reap the benefits of their work.  Williams said she was very honored to receive the award and it also motivates her to keep doing the best job she can for the Lady Jackets.  "I'd like to continue to strive to make Starkville Lady Jackets basketball even better year after year"; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we commend a Mississippi High School sports mentor who continues to bring honor to her school, her community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That  we do hereby recognize Starkville High School Girls Basketball Coach Kristie Williams for being named 2017-2018 Mississippi "Coach of the Year" by the NFHS Coaches Association and extend to Coach Williams and her family our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Kristie Williams, forwarded to the Starkville High School Principal Sean McDonnall and Starkville School Board, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
