AN ACT TO DESIGNATE A SEGMENT OF INTERSTATE 55 SOUTH IN HINDS COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, AS THE "REP. ALYCE CLARKE HIGHWAY" IN HONOR OF FORMER MISSISSIPPI HOUSE REPRESENTATIVE ALYCE CLARKE; TO AMEND SECTION 65-3-38.1, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO ALLOW HIGHWAYS, ROADS, STREETS OR BRIDGES IN THE DESIGNATED STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE NAMED AFTER ELECTED OFFICIALS; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. (1) The section of Interstate 55 South located in Hinds County, Mississippi, beginning at the County Line Road in Jackson, Mississippi, and extending approximately one (1) mile south to Beasley Road in Jackson, Mississippi, is designated and shall be known as the "Rep. Alyce Clarke Highway" in honor of former Mississippi House Representative Alyce Clarke of Yazoo City, Mississippi.
(2) The Mississippi Department of Transportation shall erect and maintain appropriate signs along and approaching the segment of highway described in subsection (1) of this section.
SECTION 2. Section 65-3-38.1, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:
65-3-38.1. * * *

No legislation shall be enacted by the Legislature naming any highway, road,
street or bridge on the designated state highway system after any person unless
the governing body of each county and municipality where the highway, road,
street or bridge is located duly adopts a resolution requesting the Legislature
to enact such legislation and files a certified copy of such resolution with
the Chairman of the Senate or House Committee to which such legislation is
referred.
( * * *2) The provisions of this section
shall not apply to Sections 65-7-151 and 65-7-153.
SECTION 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2024.
