AN ACT TO AUTHORIZE AND DIRECT THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION, WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE STATE BOARD OF HEALTH, TO PROMULGATE REGULATIONS TO REQUIRE TRAINING IN CPR AND THE USE OF THE AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS; TO AUTHORIZE AND DIRECT THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO REQUIRE SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS TO COMPLY WITH CPR REQUIREMENTS BEGINNING WITH THE 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  (1)  The State Board of Education, with the assistance of the State Board of Health, shall establish by regulation, guidelines mandating that coaches or trainers, whether paid or unpaid, shall be required to provide training in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the correct use of an automated external defibrillator to high school students as part of their physical education class.  The State Department of Education shall develop programs to provide that such training shall include thirty (30) minutes of hands-on instruction at a minimum.

     (2)  The State Department of Education shall require all public school districts and accredited private schools to comply with the regulations promulgated under subsection (1) of this section beginning with the 2014-2015 school year.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2014.
