A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE DISTINGUISHED AND MERITORIOUS SERVICE THAT UNITED STATES MARSHAL DENNIS J. ERBY RENDERED TO THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF MISSISSIPPI AND CONGRATULATING HIM UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

     WHEREAS, upon providing a total of 36 years of selfless and meritorious service to the United States and Mississippi as a member of an elite fraternity of law enforcement officers, Marshal Dennis J. Erby retired from the United States Marshal Service for the Northern District of Mississippi on December 31, 2017; and

     WHEREAS, Marshal Erby received his bachelor of science degree from Mississippi State University, during which time he was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, and he is a graduate of the National FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia; and

     WHEREAS, upon graduation, Marshal Erby joined the Mississippi Highway Patrol, where he continuously distinguished himself in the performance of outstanding service to this state, and in June 2005, he retired as a Lieutenant with Troop G in Starkville, Mississippi, with over 29 years of credible service; and

     WHEREAS, despite parking his trooper car for the last time, Marshal Erby still had the desire to protect and serve within him, so he came out of retirement in 2012 when he was appointed as the United States Marshal for the Northern District of Mississippi by President Barack Obama, who recognized his ingenuity, untiring devotion and ability to always lead by example; and

     WHEREAS, with his appointment, Marshal Dennis J. Erby made history, as he became one of only two Mississippi State Troopers to be appointed as United States Marshal in Mississippi and he became the first African American to be the United States Marshal for the Northern District of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, equipped with a wealth of experience acquired from years of service in law enforcement, Marshal Erby was tasked with providing protection services, managing the personnel in the Northern District and overseeing the Marshal Service for 37 counties, four federal courts, ten federal judges, 35 court security officers, 15 operational deputy United States Marshals and a branch of the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force; and

     WHEREAS, his selfless dedication and exceptional skills remained an essential component of his adept ability to lead his comrades in the United States Marshals, and when he retired from the service, he had a combined total of 36 years and two months of valiant patriotic service where his professionalism, camaraderie and efficiency of tasks were unparalleled; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to his heroic achievements, Marshal Erby is also a member of numerous organizations, including the Board of Directors for Columbus-Lowndes United Way, where he was past president, the Lowndes County Port Authority, the Lowndes County Development LINK's Board of Directors, 100 Black Men of Columbus, FT, Inc., where he was past secretary/treasurer, and the Board of Directors of Member First Federal Credit Union, where he was past vice president; and 

     WHEREAS, Marshal Erby, a community-oriented individual, prides himself on his greatest personal accomplishment, his wife of almost 43 years, Linder Cannon-Erby, who has supported and inspired him in all of his endeavors, and Marshal Erby is a faithful member of United Christian Baptist Church in Columbus, Mississippi, where he is chairman of the Deacon Ministry and devotes his time to serving those around him; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize the singularly distinctive career and accomplishments of such an immensely gallant individual as United States Marshal Dennis J. Erby, whose service to these United States and the State of Mississippi have culminated in a long and distinguished career and reflect great credit upon himself, the United States Marshal Service and the Mississippi Highway Patrol:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the distinguished and meritorious service that United States Marshal Dennis J. Erby rendered to the Northern District of Mississippi, congratulate him upon the occasion of his retirement and extend best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors while enjoying the lighter years of life.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Marshal Dennis J. Erby and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
