A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE ESTEEMED AND LAUDABLE LEGISLATIVE CAREER AND PUBLIC SERVICE OF THE MOST HONORABLE, DISTINGUISHED LADY FROM UNION, REPRESENTATIVE MARGARET ELLIS ROGERS.

     WHEREAS, the honorable and distinguished Lady from Union, Representative Margaret Ellis Rogers has announced her plans for retirement from the Mississippi House of Representatives at the conclusion of the 2019 Regular Session of the Mississippi Legislature, after tirelessly working on behalf of the citizens of Mississippi and House District 14, which encompasses Union County, marking a triumphant end to 15 years of legislative service in the hallowed halls of the Mississippi State Capitol; and

     WHEREAS, before assuming her seat as the member of the Mississippi House of Representatives from District 14 in 2004, Representative Rogers, a graduate of New Albany High School, graduated from the University of Mississippi with her B.B.A. and began her career in public service as an auditor for the Mississippi Department of Audit; and

     WHEREAS, upon her election to the Mississippi House, Margaret Ellis Rogers became the distinguished Lady from Union upon being sworn into office on the first day of her first legislative session in January 2004, and wasted no time requesting the legislation, amendments and reports that would help effectuate into law the ideologies and policy changes that her constituents had elected her to further; and

     WHEREAS, during her tenure as a legislator, Representative Rogers has served on the following committees:  State Library as Chairperson, Oil and Gas and Other Minerals as Vice Chairperson, Energy as Vice Chairperson, Insurance, Judiciary A, Juvenile Justice, Local and Private Legislation, Universities and Colleges, Medicaid, Banking and Financial Services, Ethics, Management, Transportation, Appropriations, Ways and Means, Enrolled Bills, Fees and Salaries of Public Offices, Investigate State Offices, Municipalities, PEER, Workforce Development, Youth and Family Affairs, Accountability, Efficiency and Transparency and Public Utilities; and

     WHEREAS, not one to limit her community involvement to the Legislature, Representative Rogers has always been active in her district and dedicated to improving the quality of life for all citizens, as evidenced by her service and affiliation as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Phi Kappa Phi, the New Albany Main Street Association, the Union County Development Association, the University of Mississippi Alumni Association, the University of Mississippi Loyalty Foundation, the National Rifle Association and the Methodist Church Administrative Board; and

     WHEREAS, the members of the House of Representatives will cherish the bond and common goals for the betterment of this great state shared with the Honorable Representative Margaret Rogers over the course of the past 15 years, and that her impeccable service was unparalleled to the Mississippi Legislature and to the constituents of District 14; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Rogers has led and continues to lead a life of bravery in the face of challenge, sincerity in the face of apathy and honesty in the presence of deceit, and through it all, this remarkable person has remained a phenomenal woman, grounded in her integrity, who seeks to improve the lives of others through hard work and the undeniable truths of the Word of God, as evidenced through her faith walk at First United Methodist Church; and

     WHEREAS, throughout her tenure in public office, Representative Rogers has been showered with continued support, encouragement and love from her family, who has endured the daunting struggles that accompany the life of an elected official, and much credit is due to her loved ones who have sacrificed countless hours without her in order to allow her to fulfill her legislative obligations, including:  her sons, Bradley Ellis Rogers and Robbins Ellis Rogers, and four grandchildren, Avery Grace Shaw, Mary Claire Shaw, Sam Bradley Rogers and John Robbins Rogers; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor the indelible legacy of remarkable service of our colleague and friend, Representative Margaret Rogers, who represented her district, this body and the people of this state with honor and intrepid dignity:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the esteemed and laudable legislative career and public service of the most honorable, distinguished Lady from Union, Representative Margaret Ellis Rogers, and express fondest respect and best wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Representative Margaret Ellis Rogers and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
