A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING KASEY MITCHELL, LANCE LOGAN, VERNON SMITH, KYLE NIXON AND BRETT HARO UPON BEING ELECTED AS THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI'S STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION OFFICERS.

     WHEREAS, the University of Southern Mississippi recently swore in its newly elected Student Government Association (SGA) officers:  Kasey Mitchell, president; Lance Logan, vice president; Vernon Smith, attorney general; Kyle Nixon, election commissioner; and Brett Haro, treasurer; and

     WHEREAS, Kasey Mitchell, the daughter of Donald and Melonie Mitchell and a junior double major in business and political science from Picayune, Mississippi, is the new SGA president; and

     WHEREAS, actively involved on the Hattiesburg campus since arriving at Southern Miss, Kasey is a Presidential Scholar and a member of the Honors College, and her involvement with SGA includes President of Freshman Associates, assistant director of community relations and executive director of student programming; and

     WHEREAS, Kasey is also a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, where she served as president in 2009, and her other campus involvement includes vice president of community service for Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity, Southern Style 2009, Southern Miss Activities Council, Eagle Connection, Golden Eagle Welcome Week (GEWW) Crew and Student United Way; and

     WHEREAS, certain to be an excellent SGA president with a vision for the future, Kasey believes it is the "little things" that make Southern Miss great, including the friendships, camaraderie and a sense of family that pervade the institution, stating, "It's those little things that will help carry the university forward into the next century."; and

     WHEREAS, Lance Logan, the son of Judy and Jim Ward and Sandy and Hubert Logan and a junior international business major and a German minor from Vicksburg, Mississippi, is the new SGA vice president; and

     WHEREAS, a courageous two-year United States Army veteran and former United States Military Academy cadet, Lance served as director of campus development for SGA in 2009 and is a member of Kappa Alpha Order, where he served as philanthropy chair, ritualist and is currently serving as secretary; and

     WHEREAS, Vernon Smith, the son of Vernon and Berlinda Smith and a junior mathematics licensure major from Lorman, Mississippi, is the new SGA attorney general; and

     WHEREAS, an active member of several student organizations on the campus of Southern Miss, Vernon's campus involvement includes GEWW 2010 executive director, Men of Excellence, Southern Style 2009, SGA Judicial Board, GEWW Crew 2008, The Legacy and E.L.I.T.E.; and

     WHEREAS, Kyle Nixon, the son of Rose Nixon and a junior psychology major from Picayune, Mississippi, is the new SGA election commissioner; and

     WHEREAS, Kyle has been actively involved in SGA since his freshman year, serving as a member of Freshman Associates, interim election commissioner, director of executive initiatives on the SGA cabinet and senator for the College of Education and Psychology; and

     WHEREAS, also active in numerous other campus organizations, Kyle is a member of Southern Style 2009, GEWW Crew 2008, Southern Miss Activities Council, Lambda Sigma, The Legacy and Student United Way; and

     WHEREAS, Brett Haro, the son of Jeff and Mary Beth Haro and a junior business administration major from New Orleans, Louisiana, is the new SGA treasurer; and

     WHEREAS, having taken an active role in the campus community since arriving at Southern Miss, Brett is a Leadership Scholar who served as a member of Freshmen Associates in 2007-2008 and was a Freshmen Associates adviser during his sophomore year; and

     WHEREAS, Brett is a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, where he served as vice president and recruitment chair in 2008-2009, a senator for the College of Business, the vice president of recruitment and retention for the Interfraternity Council, and he is a member of Southern Style 2009, GEWW Crew 2008, the Catholic Student Association, The Legacy and Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend and congratulate excellence, especially when demonstrated by the young leaders of the State of Mississippi, who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Kasey Mitchell, Lance Logan, Vernon Smith, Kyle Nixon and Brett Haro upon being elected as the University of Southern Mississippi's Student Government Association officers and express heartiest wishes for continued success in all of their future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Kasey Mitchell, Lance Logan, Vernon Smith, Kyle Nixon, Brett Haro and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
