A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING CATHY CHEN OF OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI, A STUDENT AT OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL, FOR RECEIVING THE 2010 SIEMENS AWARD FOR ADVANCED PLACEMENT IN MATH, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, the Siemens Foundation provides more than $7,000,000.00 annually in support of educational initiatives in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math through its signature programs such as the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology, the Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement, and the Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge, which encourages K-12 students to develop innovative green solutions for environmental issues; and

     WHEREAS, this year's individual scholarship recipient for Mississippi of the 2010 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement in Math, Science and Technology is Cathy Chen of Oxford, Mississippi, a student at Oxford High School; and

     WHEREAS, by supporting outstanding students today, and recognizing the teachers and schools that inspire their excellence, the foundation helps nurture tomorrow's scientists and engineers with a mission based on the culture of innovation, research and educational support that is the hallmark of Siemens' United States companies and its parent company, Siemens AG; and

     WHEREAS, established in 1998, the Siemens Foundation has been a national leader in honoring excellence among students, teachers and high schools in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through a series of innovative programs that span education from grade school through graduate school; and

     WHEREAS, Siemens is one of the largest technology employers in the country, with four locations and over 400 employees in Mississippi and has one of the nation's premier science research programs for high school students; and

     WHEREAS, Cathy Chen represents the brightest and best of Mississippi's high school students who will assist our state and nation to compete in a global economy, bringing positive recognition to her school, her community and her state, and we applaud the business community for recognizing the educational challenge of student proficiency in math and science by honoring this young Mississippian; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend academic excellence and achievement, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Cathy Chen of Oxford, Mississippi, a student at Oxford High School, for receiving the top individual scholarship award in the prestigious Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology, and extend warmest wishes for continued success in all of her future academic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Cathy Chen and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
