            WHEREAS, on May 15, 1987, the World Health Organization (WHO) passed a resolution calling for April 7, 1988, to be the first "World No Smoking Day", a date chosen because it was the 40th anniversary of WHO; and

 

            WHEREAS, on May 17, 1989, the World Health Organization passed a resolution calling for May 31st to be annually known as "World No Tobacco Day", which has been observed each year since 1989; and

 

            WHEREAS, medical research made it clear during the 1900s that tobacco use increased the likelihood of many illnesses, including heart attacks, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, and many forms of cancer; and

 

            WHEREAS, the aim of a no smoking/tobacco day is to inform the public about the dangers of using tobacco and is a day for people, non-governmental organizations, and governments to organize and conduct various activities to increase awareness about such dangers; and

 

            WHEREAS, the citizens of the State of Missouri wish to send a message of global solidarity against smoking by observing a no smoking/tobacco day to coincide with "World No Tobacco Day":

 

            NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the members of the House of Representatives of the Ninety-seventh General Assembly, Second Regular Session, the Senate concurring therein, hereby recognize May 31, 2014, to be "Missouri No Smoking/Tobacco Day" to be held in conjunction with the "World No Tobacco Day" to increase awareness about the negative effects of tobacco use on our citizens, families, friends, and communities; and

 

            BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the citizens of this state are encourage to observe the day with appropriate events and activities aimed at preventing people from starting tobacco use and assisting those who currently use tobacco in learning not only how, but why it is vitally important to stop their tobacco use.
