1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing March 2015 as Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month.
1.3WHEREAS, multiple myeloma or myeloma, the second most common blood cancer
1.4worldwide, is a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow and it is called "multiple" because the
1.5cancer can occur at multiple sites; and
1.6WHEREAS, multiple myeloma currently affects more than 100,000 people in the United
1.7States, with an estimated 20,000 new cases diagnosed each year and 10,000 losing their battle
1.8each year; and
1.9WHEREAS, once a disease of the elderly, it is now being found in increasing numbers in
1.10people under 65; and
1.11WHEREAS, because myeloma is a rare disease there can be a delayed diagnosis, leading
1.12to delayed treatment, so for this reason an increased awareness of myeloma for clinicians and the
1.13general public will lead to earlier diagnosis, allowing people to live longer; and
1.14WHEREAS, continued investment and innovation is critical to achieve early diagnosis and
1.15implement the most effective and safest treatments for myeloma patients; and
1.16WHEREAS, although we have seen important advances in the last decade there is still
1.17no cure for myeloma; and
1.18WHEREAS, the state of Minnesota is committed to finding a cure for myeloma and
1.19supports the treatment of its citizens that suffer from myeloma and encourages private efforts to
1.20enhance research funding and education programs; and
1.21NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that
1.22it hereby recognizes the month of March 2015 as Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month in the
2.1state of Minnesota and encourages all residents to join us in participating in voluntary activities to
2.2support myeloma education and the funding of research programs to find a cure.
