1.1A Senate resolution
1.2commending John Edman for 21 years of dedicated service to the state of
1.3Minnesota as the director of Explore Minnesota.
1.4WHEREAS, John Edman has been a long-time leader in Minnesota's tourism and hospitality
1.5industry, diligently serving as Minnesota's chief spokesperson for tourism-related issues and directing
1.6the state's tourism agency, Explore Minnesota; and
1.7WHEREAS, Edman spearheaded the evolution of Explore Minnesota into it's own state
1.8agency and under his leadership the agency has created new and innovating marketing strategies,
1.9developed new public and private partnerships that have generated millions of dollars in private
1.10industry funding each year, won numerous awards for media innovation and destination marketing
1.11efforts, and in 2014 launched Minnesota's largest tourism marketing campaign, #OnlyinMN; and
1.12WHEREAS, Edman has been appointed by four different governors spanning three different
1.13political parties, including Governor Jesse Ventura in 2000, Governor Tim Pawlenty in 2003 and
1.142007, Governor Mark Dayton in 2011 and 2015, and Governor Time Walz in 2019; and
1.15WHEREAS, during his career Edman has serves in numerous leadership positions at the
1.16state and national level, including the National Council of State Tourism Directors, Great Lakes
1.17USA, Mississippi River Country, The Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport Foundation, the University of
1.18Minnesota Tourism Center, Brand USA and the U.S. Travel Association, which named him 2015
1.19State Tourism Director of the Year; and
1.20WHEREAS, John Edman will officially step down from his post as the director of Explore
1.21Minnesota on June 3, 2021; and
1.22NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.23commends John Edman for 21 years of outstanding dedication and commitment to promoting
1.24tourism in Minnesota.
1.25BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare a
1.26copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the Chair of the
1.27Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to John Edman.
